A Skin-Friendly Plan

Contrary to what the commercial cosmetic companies would have you believe,

paying $100's for an anti-wrinkle cream only leaves you financially drained and

emotionally vulnerable. There is no magic potion to erase wrinkles and lines.

There is however, plenty that you can do on a daily basis to protect and

replenish your body and therefore your skin by following good nutritional

guidelines.


The dietary guidelines for healthy skin are simple:

  • Enjoy plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and cooked dried beans and peas each day.
  • Include 2 to 3 servings of a protein and calcium source each day.
  • Include several servings daily ofantioxidant-rich foods, such as citrus fruits for vitamin C, dark-green leafy vegetables and apricots for beta-carotene, nuts and seeds for vitamin E.
  • Include in your daily diet one linoleic acid-rich food, such as olive or safflower oil, nuts, avocado, or seeds.
  • Avoid highly processed convenience foods, these are high in carbohydrates (sugars)and transfats
  • Avoid repeated bouts of weight loss and regain, since weight cycling can result in premature sagging,stretch marks, and wrinkling.
  • regular exercise and relaxation
  • positive attitude to life
  • avoiding smoking, alcohol and pesticides
  • avoid overexposure to the sun
  • drink pure water, 2 litres daily
  • adequate sleep
  • good relationships with others
  • antioxidant supplements A C E, fish oil and good multivitamin/mineral daily

The inclusion of food rich in antioxidants, low in saturated fat and including a rich supply of omega 3 fatty acids, provides the best diet for delaying the effects of ageing.

This diet will contribute greatly to supplying antioxidants, in addition to various enzymes and cofactors that are now just being thought of as important to health.

A diet and lifestyle regime incorporating regular exercise and avoidance of environmental sources of free radical damage is the best method to reduce the effects of ageing and extend life quality as well as lifespan.

Skin conditions

The dietary guidelines above also apply if you or your child tend to suffer from allergic skin conditions. In this case there is often a food based irritant that needs to be removed from the diet to help correct the itchy skin condition. Common food allergens are dairy products and wheat. Try removing the food type from the diet for a week or more and see if symptoms improve. If reintroducing the food causes symptoms to return, then you know which foods to avoid. The use of the itchy skin cream is recommended to relieve the symptoms until the food source is located.
